Idyllic Chick

I got a message the other day from my friend Dennis, announcing the birth of his daughter. I knew his wife was pregnant, but it didn’t hit me until I got the message that he’s actually going to be a *father*.

I met Denny quite a few years ago when he moved into 111. He was 19, and had just gotten out of the army on a medical discharge after having signed up less than a year before. He was happy to be free, and happy to be, well, just about anything. I mean he’s a very upbeat, fun, *happy* man. A couple of cops called him ‘Laughing Boy’ because he giggled all the way to the station one time.

Dennis has called me ‘Mum’ for the past ten years because back on SW 3rd Avenue I was the person who made sure that he ate at least once a day, and made him sweet iced tea, and would front him money for a Ramones concert ticket. So it’s hard for me to think of my ‘son’ as a father. And while I would never have imagined that Dennis would be the first of our punk little group to settle down and marry and reproduce, I think he’s going to do a good job. I’m surprising myself by saying that, but he has a good sense of values, and a steady job, and all those grown-up things that make for a good parent. I am very proud of him, and wish him the best of luck.
