Chris and I went to the beach yesterday to fly kites. The wind was erratic at best, and only strong enough to hold up our lighter kite. So while C fought the gusts, I took part in one of my other favorite beach pastimes: looking for dead things. I love walking down the beach scanning for bits and pieces of exotic sealife, the likes of which have never seen the light of day.
While the kiting weather was lacking, it was a great day for dead things! I was excited to find a dead starfish. I've found live starfish on the beach before, and have always tried to get them back into the ocean. They usually end up washing back up onto the shore, but I always did my best to keep them alive and kicking in their natural environment. But since the one I found yesterday was already quite dead, I gingerly picked it up and stowed it next to our belongings. It was still kind of mushy, but I had plans of drying it out in the sun. As the day went on, I ended up finding four more dead starfish! Two more adults, and two babies. So I'll have a fun starfish drying day today!
I was also hoping to find some sea glass yesterday, since I've never had the pleasure of coming across such a treasure. Well it was a good day for that too! I found a half a dozen pieces of glass! Only half of them were keepers, one piece still having legible raised letters on the bottom of the beer bottle reading '16 oz'. Hell, I can get that at Joe and Laura's house, you know? But a couple of the pieces of beer bottle glass were well worn and sanded nicely. My favorite piece that I found is from an old Coca-Cola bottle. It's a neat shade of light aquamarine and it makes me happy.
