Katie's Socks

Pattern: I started with the Baby Cable Rib pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks, but instead of doing the cable every four rows, I did it every eight rows, alternating every four rows. That doesn't make much sense, but if you look at the photo you can see what I mean. I used the magic cast on, the Widdershins heel again, and the sewn bind off again, and I think that I may never knit a sock differently. I made plenty of mistakes in these socks, so I hope Katie doesn't look at them too closely.

Yarn: Trekking XXL (75% Superwash wool, 25% Nylon) in color 149. I picked it up at the LYS one day so that I wouldn't feel guilty for not buying anything.

Needles: Yeah, ok. The needles. I started with my trusty size 1 powder-coated metal needles. Same kind of needles I've been using since I took up dpns. But I only had four of them, which caused the sock to get a little big for the needles when I was working on the gusset. So while I was in Baltimore I picked up a set of beautiful rosewood needles that had five in a pack. You know, spread the stitches out some so the sock wouldn't stretch out. I knitted the second sock on these new needles. When I finished them and laid them out next to each other, I saw that one sock (I'm not sure if it was the first or second one) is noticeably larger than the other. Like well over an inch longer! I had made double dog sure that the needles were the exact same size, but the way I was holding the new pair make the socks come out at a different gauge. I was able to block out most of the difference, but I sure hope they fit Katie alright!

Lesson Learned: Never switch needles mid-knit!

Began: April 22, 2007

Finished: May 9, 2007. Really damn fast for me!

I love, love, love my socks!
Thank you Sharon for gifting me with them and pardon my humongous gussets.
