Weeks in reflection

Quite a bit has happened in my meager life in the past couple of weeks:
I turned 39.
I got tattooed.
Two foxes ran right in front of me in my yard.
I drank ginger vodka.
I drank White Star champagne.
I quit my job.
I started my new job at my very own business.
I received flowers and balloons.
My dog ran off. (But came right back when we called him. Whew!)
I've nearly finished knitting a pair of socks.
My orchid bloomed.

I would say life is good, to say the least!

Comments

Just want to respond to a couple of comments I've received recently:

Talking about the Hot Tamale skirt at Here we go again, Alice said, 'Don't you worry about the way it'd hang?' I kind of do. I'm using a slick cotton yarn, and it's pretty heavy. But I'll line it (Probably buy a black slip and just sew it to the inside of the finished product.), and that will give it more stability. And I trust Jodi and her patterns!

On the same subject, Spinny Bunt said, 'What about duplicate stitch for the flames?' Honestly, my gut reaction was, 'EW! No way!', but that was immediately followed with the thought of, 'My gawd! That's fucking brilliant!' The more I think about it, the more I like it! I have a ton of little tiny balls of the red yarn, made from ripping out the intarsia. I was worried about having enough red to do the striping. And I've got a ton of black so I can do the whole skirt in black. I doubt if I'll be able to finish the duplicate stitch in time to wear the skirt to Necro, but I might be able to do it by Rhinebeck. Regardless, I think this is a go! Thanks for the idea!

On my Oi entry, Chris said, 'Wait! What? Did I miss your birthday??' No reason to be alarmed, people! You still have six shopping days until my birthday! C let me open my gift early because a) He knows that we need to use it asap; b) I was foaming at the mouth trying to guess what it was; and c) we're going to a very fancy dinner at the Melting Pot, so that's another gift, and why not spread it out, eh?

Red on yella, kill a fella brought out the snake dislikers, and I don't blame you one bit! I've gotten used to them in the past year and a half, but I was really freaking out for about two weeks after I saw that first coral snake out here. Denise, I'm glad I didn't mention the cotton mouth that we saw quite a few months ago! All curled up just a few feet from the main entrance to our house. That one scares the bejesus out of me, as if there is any bejesus left in me. But really, coral snakes are so small, and they really do just want to get the hell away from you. Not a bit worrisome.

Gotta go get ready for another day of yarn hauling. And some more painting. It was sooo nice to sleep in today! And soon all will be rolling right along at the shop! And then I'll quit my day job, and won't life be fun then?!

Red on yella, kill a fella

I saw another coral snake!

I wasn't blogging back in March 2006 when Chris and I first moved into the Satellite of Love, so you didn't get to hear about my first encounter with the wildlife in the suburban country. Just two weeks after we moved in I was walking to my car in the morning, and a coral snake was all laid out on our sidewalk. As I approached him, he just scooted right along in front of me. All I could think was, 'Red on yella, kill a fella... Red on yella, kill a fella...' I knew it was no king snake, and I knew that corals are very, very poisonous. I was scared half to death! I took a couple of crappy photos with my camera, just to prove to others that I was not camping in the crazy tent.

After verifying with my serpent-loving boss that it was indeed a coral snake, I found that while their venom is quite dangerous, it is pretty hard for a coral snake to actually get his venom into a human. Apparently they are 'chewers'. They have to get ahold of you and gnaw on you for a bit to fill you up with their vile liquid of death. Seeing as how their mouths and teeth are pretty small, it's hard for them to get the bite on a big thing like me. This is not to say that my dogs wouldn't be dead in a heartbeat if they got into a scuffle with a coral snake, but these snakes are also timid creatures, who would really just rather be left alone.

So today when C&I were getting out of the truck after a long day of yarn-hauling, I wasn't nearly as frightened to see a coral snake on the sidewalk as I was that first time. This one was shorter than the one I saw last year, and his tiny mouth *might* make it around my pinkie toe, should it be available to him. He crawled through the leaves and under the trailer, just like the one that I saw last year did. Happy little snake. I just won't be poking around under our house anytime soon!

Oi.

So. Very. Tired.

But Chris gave me my birthday gift tonight! It's a huuuuuuge external drive to back up all of the now very important stuff that sits on my pretty blue computer. I've wanted to be able to easily do this for a couple of years now. Every time I hear a horror story about someone losing all of his digital photos, or a hard drive crashing beyond redemption, I throw up a little. Because I know I'm not immune to one of those things happening to me. Since I've started doing Hanks work, I've been super double paranoid about it all poofing. But now the chances of that are slim to none! He's a good gifter, that husband of mine! I'll get dinner at the Melting Pot as well, and maybe some cupcakes if I'm a very good wifey. But I really am very tired (Two coats of primer down, one to go!), and I'll be babbling soon if I don't step away from the keyboard and go to bed.

'Night!

Here we go again

So you may or may not remember (It's been a while, you know) that I've been working on this great skirt by Jodi Green called Hot Tamale. Hot cool is that skirt?! Plus I have a thing for knitted skirts. Haven't ever completed one, and I rarely wear skirts, but I totally have a thing for them. So early this year I cast on for this skirt. Cast on 600 stitches. Not 60. 600. Yowza. Got em all on there, got the cool ass ruffle started, and realized the ruffle was twisted. But I have a sewing machine! And I know how to use it! So I cut the ruffle, twisted it back, sewed it up, and started knitting again. Coolio!

Then came the long-float intarsia part. Did I mention that I've never done intarsia before on a non-felted project? Hrm, yeah, I didn't think so. So I figure I'm a fly enough knitta to just jump into this long-float intarsia stuff and come out smelling like roses and looking like a pin-up in my bad-ass skirt. Ha! That was stupid. I had bunches and tucks and holes and crikey. So I ripped back to the ruffle and started again. That was stupid too. What made me think I would be doing anything differently this time around? Same problems. But this time when I frogged the intarsia part, I couldn't get the stitches on the ruffle picked up properly, so I decided to knit a new ruffle. 600 more cast on stitches later, I found that I had twisted it again. More cutting, more sewing, more fixing.

This time I decided to go about the intarsia differently. I'll knit each side flat! Then sew the side seams together! I'm brilliant! I'm charming! I'm a knitta! I still haven't done intarsia before! See the holes! See the puffing! See Sharon rip it all out again! Isn't knitting fun?!

But I love this ruffle. I've become very attached to it. And I love this yarn that I've chosen (King Tut cotton). So here's the plan: I'm going to knit this skirt. And it's going to be red and black like the plan. Mostly black, with stripes of red creeping in about halfway down, the red stripes getting wider as they approach the ruffle at the bottom. No intarsia, to fretting, just simple stockinette in the round. That? I can do. I hope.
